Construction began in 1949, for the then first league football club RNK Split, which moved to the field in 1955. More modern club rooms of the stadium were built in preperation for the Mediterranean Games held in Split in 1979. Its capacity is about 8000 seats. A new tartan track encompassing the football field was installed, so the stadium is also used by the Athletics Club Split. In addition to the main field, within the SC, on the western side, there is also an auxiliary field with smaller stands and also several smaller fields, all with artificial grass, and auxiliary club rooms of the historically first league club RNK Split.
